I initially trained as a forest engineer, but the 1982 crisis sawed off all graduation dreams in that Canadian field. I went on to work more than 20 years overseas. I started off working a year in the Swiss Alps as a forester, which put me in my best physical shape, ever. Upon completing an MBA at the London Business School in 1987, I joined Sandoz, a Swiss conglomerate, in Basel. I was in for a Swiss German adventure.

Read MoreI grew up in a small rural, racially diverse and economically disadvantaged community of Makaha/Waianae on the leeward coast of Oahu, Hawaii. I came to Harvard sight unseen. I was athletically unrecruited, but earned varsity letters in several sports all 4 years. I was not offered any financial aid and my immigrant father refused to take loan offers, so I worked in the HBS dining hall serving breakfast my freshman year, and as Mather House assistant librarian for 2.5 years to help pay for my education.
