Wildlife, the natural world and veterinary science have much to contribute to human medicine. Finding these insights in remote deserts, lush forests, and deep oceans is the focus of my work. After twenty years as an academic cardiologist I embarked on a journey to find an answer to a single question: How can looking across species and across evolutionary time improve how physicians treat, and prevent disease in our ‘human-animals patients?
Collaborating with wildlife biologists, veterinarians, and evolutionary biologists around the world and sharing insights with my undergraduate and medical students at Harvard, UCLA and beyond have been tremendously fulfilling intellectually and personally.
My latest research focuses on female health and mental health across the tree of life.
